At the start of the 1990s, the town of Metz and the Icare hot-ait balloon club (based in Briey) decided to create the Montgolfiades de Metz (Metz hot-air balloon event): 20 balloonists took off from the magnificent lake site.Over the years, the Metz hot-air balloon event has become one of the most prestigious aerostatic displays in France, thanks to the show put on by the pilots and the fact that they can take off from an exceptional setting, right beside the town centre.The pilots and their passengers enjoy the opportunity to fly over the town of Metz in exceptional conditions, as long as the winds are favourable…Every year, this large gathering of aerostats, an unmissable end-of-summer event, attracts almost 10 000 curious visitors.For the pilots, the Montgolfiades de Metz is also a chance to compete for the Metz Trophée Cristal (crystal trophy).
